Wedding Adventures - Part 3 The Wedding

28June10

Yep, we are finally to that point in our adventures - we went and got hitched.  Surrounded by our friends and family in one of the most beautiful locations we could think of we said "forever".  Pictures should be coming soon,  from what we have seen thus far they are AMAZING!  We will let you decide...

Wedding Adventures - Part 3 Mother Trucker

Wednesday morning, we pack up our bikes with our worldly possessions and FINALLY start our tour.  It never ceases to amazing me anytime I go backpacking or biking in this instance, how little we really need to get by.  We are always hearing about bigger, better, and newer gadgets.  In the end, they are generally totally unnecessary.

23June10-
Start: Grant Village
End: Canyon Village
Miles: 38

Well, this was the start of our first tour on the mother truckers and it quickly became evident that the limiting factor would not be the bikes... The were a couple of steep hills but nothing compared to what we were expecting to see on the last day.  Day 3 has us peddling over the Continental Divide, not once, but two times.  Back to the day at hand...  We saw a lot of geezers, lots and lots of geezers.  We also decided that seeing the park by bike is the best way to do it.  We spent  most of the day touring the area with the same group of cars.  Sure, the cars may be able to go 45 mph, but that doesnt' really happen in Yellowstone.  Have you ever been to Yellowstone?  Traffic is AWFUL!!

24June10-
Start: Canyon Village
End: Madison
Miles: 26

We finally ran into another group of cyclist, they personify what we want to be like when we grow up.  The group is comprised of 4 people (3 men and 1 woman) and there are an amazing group of people.  All of them are retired and over 60, they started their ride in Portland, OR and were ending on the east coast (upstate NY for some, Virginia for others).   They didn't know each other prior to the start of their adventure, they met through www.adventurecycle.com, think of it as a matchmaking site for cyclists.  I think for both of us meeting this group of folks proved to be both the most enjoyable and memorable part of our trip.

25June10-
Start:Madison
End: Grant Village
Miles: 34

The day we both were dreading finally arrived, we had to climb over the Continental Divide.  For a bit of perspective Yellowstone is at and average of ~5000', we had to climb to over ~8000 on two separate occasions.  Keep in mind it was not just us and our bikes that had to make it, we were also carrying all our gear with us.  We figure each of our bikes weighed approximately 50lbs, this went towards making the uphills slower and the downhills faster.  The nice thing - the actually process of doing it was much easier that either of us had made out in our head.  That isn't to say it was easy, just not as painful as we had anticipated.  It was very satisfying to get to each elevation sign and know that we had peddled there.

All in all the bike tour was great and we were sad it had to come to an end.  We will definitely be planning another one soon!  Below is a list of things we will bring/do before out next trip:
  1. chain lube
  2. extra brake pads
  3. degreaser
  4. fishing stuff
  5. 2 presta valve adapters
  6. calling card (good luck with cell phone reception)
  7. learn how to use hand pump
  8. laundry line
  9. clothes  pins
  10. sun shirt (bugs/sun)
  11. repair kit x 2

Wedding Adventures - Part 2 Trying to see Yellowstone by bike

While planning our trip to Wyoming we hatched many grand plans we had hoped to achieve - bike Yellowstone, climb The Grand Teton, oh yeah and get married!  After much though and deliberation (all of 5 minutes) we decided that the best time for our Yellowstone tour would be in the early part of the week of June 21st.  This way we would have the later part of the week and the weekend to tend to any last minute wedding details.  As plans tend to go, this one went out the door.

As stated in the previous post we spent Monday morning with our photographer taking pictures and trying to look like we were not freezing.  Afterward we decided that we deserved something hot and headed to the Bunnery for breakfast. This was followed-up with a trip for Matt to get his hairs cut.   He had been talking about 'A Cut Above' and how much he liked it - I now know why.  You have your choice of playboy, maxim, and car and driver to peruse while you wait.  What guy wouldn't want to get their hair cut at a place like that?!?  After that the day started to get away from us and we determined that we probably would not start biking after all.  O'well, no big deal we figured we would drive up to Yellowstone, camp Monday night and get a early start Tuesday.

We finally get ourselves in order and drove to Yellowstone.  Upon entering the park we are met with a sign informing us all campgrounds except one are FULL.  We quickly head to the only 'available' campground and learn the reason it isn't full is because it is closed.  That didn't stop anyone, us included, from finding a patch of land to call our own.   We went to bed that night thinking Tuesday would be the big day, the day we would start our tour.

Tuesday morning was cold and rainy.  To top it off Melissa wasn't feeling too hot so...Matt made an executive decision.  We would drive to Old Faithful and see what there was to see on Tuesday and FINALLY start our tour Wednesday.

Melissa had never been to Yellowstone prior to this and was somewhat taken aback by the huge crowds that we found.  There is stadium seating around Old Faithful, crazy!  Anyhow, we spent the better part of Tuesday walking around and viewing the geysers in the Old Faithful area.  They really are amazing formations and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  We were also thinking it was a great plan so we didn't have to deal with this zoo atmosphere on our bikes.  Ticking this area off our list would allow us to cruise by later in the week.

Wedding adventures - Part 1

We left Olympia, WA around 6pm Friday, June 18th.  As you can see the 'hot rod' was loaded down pretty good with all of our stuff.  Prior to our departure we joked around about the ability of our trusty steed to make the drive to Wyoming, maybe that was a bad idea...

Saturday morning, about 50 miles outside Missoula, MT we broke down.  We had pulled into a gas station and when the car was put into park it continued to move. After driving around the island a few times without stopping success Matt somewhat kindly informed Melissa to turn the car off.  Duh...  Once the car was turned off it refused to start again.  I feel it should be mentioned that we broke down across from a 'Used Cow Lot', seriously, who knew such a thing existed??

We got a tow back to Missoula, it turned out to be an easy fix and we were back on the road in a couple of hours.  This little setback turned our 13 hr trip into a 24 hr trip, o'well, we made it!

Once in Jackson, WY we were faced with a pile of chores.  We spent the better part of the weekend running around trying to organize things for the wedding before we went on our bike trip through Yellowstone NP.

Monday morning we met with our photographer, Heather Erson (http://www.heathererson.com/) to take some engagement shots.  She and Drew did an AMAZING job.  If you are curious how things turned out you can check out her blog : http://blog.heathererson.com/ .  We cannot wait to see how the wedding pictures look.

It's offical

We are hitched!  Thank you to all of those who were able to make it to the northwest corner of Wyoming to share the event with us and thank you to those who were unable to make it for the well wishes.

Updates on our adventures soon come.
